HE: A few years ago, no one would have dared call a four-door diesel-powered sedan a sports car in any way but Mercedes-Benz has added the Sport badge to its E280 CDI.

SHE: It does come with some nice 18-inch alloy wheels, which bring grippier tyres. There's also a small rear spoiler and chrome exhaust tips, as well as more features.

HE: It's hardly a sports car to drive, although it's supremely comfortable and very composed. It's an easy car to live with. I also love the three-pointed star on the edge of the bonnet - it makes you feel like king of the road ... or queen.

SHE: The V6 engine has good acceleration and is quite refined for a diesel. Plus I like the way it works with the seven-speed automatic.

HE: It is a surprising engine, although it's strange that it's effectively a detuned version of the same diesel engine available in other Benzes. I also love the turning circle, which makes it easy to park and do U-turns.

SHE: Inside, it's a typical Mercedes with a sensible layout, quality materials and easy functionality. It feels a bit like an old-man's car, though.

HE: I don't get that at all. I think they've created an upmarket, timeless interior. The sound system is pretty good too, although the giant analogue clock in the instrument cluster almost makes it look like they forgot something.

SHE: I reckon that looks really stylish! The rear seat space makes this a limousine of sorts. With the seats down it's really practical.

HE: The Sport pack includes things like headlights that look around corners, rain-sensing wipers and satellite navigation. But I wish Mercedes would use real leather rather than "man-made leather" - what is that anyway?

SHE: There's no doubt it's a great car but I couldn't live with the exterior styling - it looks dated.

HE: I love the classic look and reckon it will hold its age brilliantly. Sure, you pay a bit for it but there's also a lot to like about it. And while the Sport pack may not exactly be sporty, it adds value and makes it a sharper car to drive.
